Members of the Software Developers Association at ASU (SoDA) attended the 2014 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in March, representing Fulton at the largest conference in the gaming industry.

The Game Developers Conference is composed of an expo, networking events, awards shows such as the Independent Games Festival and the Game Developers Choice Awards. Industry professionals also provide a variety of tutorials, lectures, and roundtables on topics covering programming, design, audio, production, business and management, and visual arts.

Due to a donation from Raytheon, SoDA members were able to attend two days of the conference, where they gained real-world networking experience with gaming professionals.

“I never thought I would ever be able to attend a conference like this. I always heard about the future technologies on display and how people have landed an interview right on the expo floor,” said Cory Calhoun, a Computer Science sophomore and SoDA treasurer who attended the conference.

“Just getting the opportunity to go and represent ASU was an honor and privilege.”

Members participated in demonstrations of virtual reality technology, interviewed on the spot with industry professionals, and explored the future of video games.

Calhoun hopes that, in the future, SoDA members will be able to develop a project worthy of presenting at the Game Developers Conference that will further engage Fulton students with industry professionals and new developments in the field of video game development and design.
