SP16 Outstanding Competitive FSO Leader: Sami Mian, SDRC

Sami Mian, outgoing president and founding member of the Sun Devil Robotics Club (SDRC), was awarded the Outstanding Competitive FSO Leader Award at the 2015-2016 Student Organization Awards & Recognition (SOAR) Ceremony on Thursday, April 28th for his unparalleled dedication to the team and Fulton as a whole. Here is what his fellow SDRC members had to say about him.

Adam Lew, former SDRC Vice President:

Through the past four years, Sami has spent countless hours running the team, even when he was abroad for a semester and away during summers for work. He has also helped fund several of the team’s projects and opportunities. Besides running the club and handling day to day organizational requirements, Sami is also the leader of the Cornell Cup and Shanghai Cup teams. He organizes and runs the meetings for both teams, and is a core part of the respective design teams; this year, both groups will be attending their respective national competitions as finalists, after passing several qualifying rounds.

Sami is also single handedly responsible for the whole outreach program of the Sun Devil Robotics group. He sits on the regional planning committees for various STEM programs in Arizona (FLL, FRC, Vex, etc) and helps organize and volunteer at all of these events across the valley (and has been invited to judge at the international level). He has made SDR become more involved and prevalent in the Fulton community, and has brought recognition to ASU and Fulton Engineering within the community as well as on a national level through competitions and outreach.

Yinong Chen, SDRC Advisor:

Sami Mian has been the president of Sun Devil Robotics Club for three years. He leads the club to be in almost every possible outreach and competition activities, including Cornell Cup, VEX robotics competition, BattleCode competition, Engineering Open, homecoming, etc. He also helps in many events outside ASU, for example, being a judge of FIRST Robotics competition, FIRST LEGO League competition, Arizona Underwater Competition, etc. He participates in multiple projects in the club and helps the new members to develop their skills in projects and application development. His leadership has made the Sun Devil Robotics Club one of the most active and successful student organizations. As the results of his leadership and participation in many events and activities, ASU robotics program is well-known in all Arizona Schools and among many universities around countries.

Thank you for leading, Sami. Here’s to another great year!
