The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is a competitive student organization dedicated to providing real-world, team-oriented experience for students through the process of designing, building, and racing a vehicle. The organization enjoys the leadership of Dr. Steven Trimble, Professor of Practice within the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport, and Energy. Dr. Trimble was awarded the 2013-2014 Outstanding Engineering Student Organization Advisor distinction at the annual Student Organization Awards & Recognition (SOAR) ceremony on Monday, April 14, for his work with SAE.

Dr. Trimble is constantly involved with SAE, pushing the organization in the right direction. When the SAE teams were having difficulty communicating, Dr. Trimble’s leadership helped members overcome the problems by initiating meetings with teams and the president and helping the organization president, Rae Rutkowski, open and maintain lines of communication. Dr. Trimble also championed the safety of the students and took charge of the transition to the new air conditioned warehouse space in Psychology North, securing a safer environment for SAE members to conduct their work.

Additionally, during the fall semester, Dr. Trimble achieved getting the approval of MAE 294, Design and Manufacture I, which allows members of SAE to receive credit for working on SAE projects. He has helped SAE receive more funding to allow the teams can participate in national competitions and bring recognition and prestige to the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. Members of SAE laud Dr. Trimble as instrumental in helping them work with administration and within themselves to be the best possible competitive teams.
